Teachers' Belize Summer Workshop
As part of IZE's efforts to introduce as many people as possible to the wonders of the tropical rain forest and coral reef of Belize, we are once again offering an introductory teacher workshop at a very special price for science teachers from middle school, high school, and post graduate.

This 8 day summer session includes 3 nights in the rainforest at Blue Creek and 4 nights at South Water Caye.

Individuals accompanying an educator can travel with the group for a special price. Please note that there is a minimum of 5 participants for the educators summer workshop. If we do not sign up at least 5 educators, we will be unable to offer a workshop.

Other dates are available for teacher sessions provided you can gather 5 other participants. Please contact us for more information.

Tropical ecology and cultural adventure
Both rain forests and coral reefs are recognized as two of our planet's most precious ecosystems. Rich with life, they serve as habitat for most of the plants and animals on earth. They are great reservoirs of bio-diversity, which contribute not only to our natural history but also to medicine, agriculture, and food products.

IZE Belize's teacher summer workshop has been carefully designed to familiarize middle school, high school, and higher educators with IZE's diverse programs. Educators will be introduced to the magnificent tropical ecology of Belize and have the unique opportunity to live among the Maya and learn their culture, with the hope that they will share this unique ecological and cultural experience with their students.

Into the rain forest: Blue Creek
The first part of your adventure will take place on our 200 acre Blue Creek Rainforest Preserve located in the remote, largely unexplored mountains of southern Belize, a protected area that can only be reached by foot path. The site is situated on the banks of a clear, wild, tropical river, densely populated by many species of freshwater fish. Several trails and areas accessible from Blue Creek allow for observation of hundreds of species of exotic birds and plants, and dozens of species of reptiles, amphibians and mammals.

Large, spectacular limestone caves, some with Mayan hieroglyphics, are scattered throughout this area. You will also visit Blue Creek Village, a Mayan community. Enjoy a variety of opportunites, including home stays and participation in cooking, farming, trapping. Learn form village artisians how they practice their craft and enjoy native music created on hand made instruments carved from the rainforest. Visit the ancient mayan site of Lubaantun, the Place of Fallen Stones.

Your time at Blue Creek will include rainforest orientation and Ethnobotany tours; cave exploring; snorkeling in the river to observe many species of freshwater fish, crabs and shrimp; and discussions on the present day Maya. Evenings will be spent on night walks to look for nocturnal animals.

Explore the barrier reef: South Water Caye
The second part of your adventure will take place on beautiful South Water Caye, our tropical paradise located 14 miles off the coast of Belize directly on the barrier reef.

This is perhaps the world's finest classroom, revealing the mysteries of an extremely dynamic ecosystem. The area has been named by U.N.E.S.C.O. as a World Heritage Site and the Belize Government has designated South Water Caye and the immediate surrounding area a marine reserve.

The crystal clear 86º Caribbean water surrounding the island are teeming with a diverse spectrum of marine life. Travel by boat to neighboring islands to observe rookeries of magnificent frigate birds, brown boobies and pelicans. Explore mangrove islands filled with unusual creatures.

PADI certified scuba diving is also available to enhance your summer workshop. Diving activities for certified divers can be incorporated into the workshop schedule, while uncertified divers can learn the basics of diving and try a reef dive in one of the worlds best diving areas through the Discover Scuba course.
